CHAPTER 19

TWO PARAMEDICS ARRIVED first to check up on Leah and Nancy. While Leah didn’t say a whole lot (probably because she knew she was in huge trouble), Nancy would not quit blubbering about a monster fox, my unhinged ‘dog,’ and how she didn’t feel safe anymore in her own house. In response, the paramedics kept putting flashlights in her eyes, looking for signs of a concussion.

I was getting nervous about how long it was taking Regan to return when she and Gabriel finally walked through the back gate. They arrived mere minutes before a police cruiser pulled up behind the ambulance. I could tell by Gabriel’s tousled hair that he’d been flying recently, but he’d at least come dressed as a normal human in jeans and a T-shirt.

Gabriel took charge, saving me the trouble from explaining things to the police. He insisted that a feral fox was on the loose and had attacked us when we heard a commotion outside. He claimed the fox disappeared before we could catch it. Nancy tried to intervene, saying she didn’t remember Gabriel at the scene at all, but the paramedics convinced her that because she hit her head, she didn’t remember all the details clearly.

In the end, the police took the story at face value, and the paramedics escorted a confused Nancy into the ambulance for a few hospital tests just in case. Gabriel ushered the rest of us inside the house, where Regan immediately confronted Leah.

“What were you thinking, showing up at our house in the middle of the night?”

Leah’s stoic face crumpled, tears streaking down the corners. “Dad and I got in a bad fight. He found my phone and saw our messages. When he tried to forbid me from even texting you, I-I couldn’t take it. I left the house as soon as he and Mom went to bed. I wasn’t going to let him destroy our fr-friendship.”

“Oh, Leah.” I really wanted to punch Paul right then. “We never meant to forbid you from being friends. We just wanted to give you some distance so you wouldn’t have to deal with any of this.”

Regan pulled her into a fierce hug. “I couldn’t live with myself if that fox hurt you.”

The two melted into a pile of sobs and fervent vows that they would always stick together.

Gabriel, clearly uncomfortable by the record-setting level of teen angst, wandered into the kitchen and stood by the back door, looking out the window.

I dreaded what would happen next but knew it had to be done. I pulled out my phone and pressed Jessie’s number.

Jessie answered in a groggy voice, whispering so she wouldn’t wake Paul next to her in bed. “Melissa? What’s going on? It’s late.”

I took a deep breath. “We had an issue at our house.”

Regan noticed me then and cried out, “You’re not talking to Jessie, are you?”

Leah turned so pale, I worried she might pass out. “Don’t tell them what happened.”

I gave both girls my best withering glance to silence them.
